This assessment is written by an interested party and should be read as one. New York Registered Agent.ai sells the competing service at $99 a year. The LegalZoom figure carrying the argument is not our characterization: $249 annually, flat, on automatic renewal, with no introductory reduction identified during our July 2026 verification.

What the Premium Actually Purchases

Institutional recognition, and the value of it is not zero. LegalZoom has operated since the late 1990s, appears in the awareness of lenders and landlords and counterparties without explanation, and carries no meaningful risk of disappearing mid-term and leaving a designation pointing at a vacated address. For an owner who wants a familiar name attached to a state filing and considers vendor research a poor use of an afternoon, that is a rational purchase. No smaller company can offer the same reassurance, this one included.

The Premium Measured Against New York's Own Charge

The relevant comparison in this state is not vendor against vendor. It is vendor against the statute.

New York collects $9 from a limited liability company every two years for the Biennial Statement, and collects nothing else on a recurring basis. Across one full biennial cycle, LegalZoom bills $498 and the Department of State bills $9. The fee schedule in LLC Law § 1101 is short enough to read in a minute, and nothing in it obliges a limited liability company to retain a registered agent at any price.

That is the fact this category tends to leave out. A New York LLC comes with a process agent already installed. The Secretary of State occupies the role from the moment the articles are accepted, holds it for the life of the entity, and cannot be displaced by hiring anyone. Service delivered to the state is effective against your company and is forwarded by mail to the address in your public record. Every dollar paid to LegalZoom, to us, or to anyone else buys a supplement to that arrangement, never a substitute for it.

The final row is the one worth sitting with. Only the $9 column is mandatory. An owner who files the Biennial Statement on schedule and designates no private agent whatsoever is fully compliant with New York law, and pays $4.50 a year for the privilege. What that owner gives up is speed, since documents arrive at postal pace, and privacy, since the receiving address is publicly searchable. Those are real costs. They are not legal ones, and any page that tells you otherwise is selling.

If the private channel is worth having, it should be priced as what it is.
