The Free Year Is Not a Trick

A formation package from Inc Authority carries twelve months of agent service at no cost. Our review searched the published terms for the usual conditions attached to free periods and found no activation fee, no truncated term, and no penalty for departing when the period ends. A company in its first year receives a working agent for nothing during the stretch when every expense is felt most acutely. The benefit is real and it is stated here before any criticism, because a comparison that suppressed it would be less useful to you and less honest besides.

The Second Year Is Undocumented

The renewal rate is not published. During our July 2026 verification we examined three separate surfaces for it: the packages page where the formation tiers are described, the support material where recurring charges would ordinarily be explained, and the site's own presentation of what each paid bundle includes. A second-year figure appears on none of them. When a recurring price is absent across all of a vendor's public material, the customary explanation is that it is disclosed at the checkout screen or over the telephone.

Supplying an estimate here would be simple and would defeat the purpose of the page, so the figure remains absent. The structural objection stands without it. A registered agent is a permanent line item for as long as the entity exists, and the invitation is to accept that line item before seeing what it says.

New York Gives an Unquoted Renewal Very Little Power

In most states an undisclosed renewal has leverage, because the buyer needs the service and switching is slow. New York removes both conditions.

Begin with what the designation is. LLC Law § 302 provides that a limited liability company may designate a registered agent, and permission is the whole of it. There is no corresponding requirement anywhere in the chapter, for the plain reason that the state has already assigned itself the role. Process against a New York LLC is effective when served on the Secretary of State, an arrangement created at formation and incapable of being cancelled, delegated away, or replaced by anything a vendor sells.

The consequence for an unquoted renewal is direct. The certificate that changes an agent in New York can also revoke one outright, leaving no private designation on the record and no compliance defect either. That is the cheapest exit available in any state: a single $30 filing, after which nothing recurs at all. Your documents then travel the statutory route, carried by mail to whatever service-of-process address your public record shows, at postal speed, visible to any searcher who looks.

So a New York owner facing a renewal nobody will quote in advance has three responses rather than one. Wait for the number and decide then. Move to a provider whose number is printed before purchase. Or file the revocation and keep only the free statutory channel. The middle course is ours and we recommend it, but the third is legitimate and belongs in the list.
